Dan Fegan of Lagardère Unlimited represents some of the top players in the National Basketball Association. Mr. Feganâﾀﾙs client list contains almost 30 NBA players, including 2011 Defensive Player of the Year Dwight Howard, 2010 overall first pick John Wall, and 3 members of the Dallas Mavericks, José Juan Barea, Shawn Marion, and Jason Terry, winners of the 2011 NBA Championship.
Before joining Lagardère Unlimited as Basketball President, Dan Fegan owned and operated his own sports representation firm, Dynasty Sports Group, based in Los Angeles. During this time, Mr. Fegan displayed innovation by implementing a one-year opt-out clause in contracts. The clause allows a player to void the remaining years of his contract and seek a better deal with another team. As a result, the player gains leverage over the existing team and may use the contract details to work a new deal for more years or a higher salary. A novel idea at the time, the clause is now in common use across all major sports. This innovation earned players represented by Dan Fegan an additional $100 million in 1 year.
Dan Fegan pioneered the use of another commonly exercised negotiation tool, the sign-and-trade provision. With this contractual provision, a basketball team can sign a key player before he reaches free agent status. Once signed, the team is free to trade the player to a different team, and the playerâﾀﾙs contract remains intact. Without this provision, the team would receive nothing in return when a free agent signs with another team, and the player would be subject to the more restrictive salary cap rules.
Dan Fegan sold his firm to Blue Entertainment Sports Television (BEST) in 2008 while maintaining his career and client base. In 2010, BEST was acquired by Lagardère Unlimited, a subsidiary of media company Lagardère SCA.
Dan Fegan attended Connecticut College before earning his Juris Doctor at Yale University. A collegiate hockey player, Mr. Fegan now challenges himself by fly-fishing, skiing, hiking, and playing chess.
